Program release for the 5th edition of Southern Sweden Design Days

Main Location, Lokstallarna

22–25 May 2025, Southern Sweden Design Days celebrates its fifth anniversary, and today the festival program is released on southernswedendesigndays.com. During four days, Malmö will be filled with exhibitions, seminars, workshops, and festivities at more than 80 locations across the city.

Southern Sweden Design Days invites design enthusiasts from around the world to explore and discuss the role of design in a sustainable future. From artistically progressive objects to innovative solutions that give industrial materials a new life, the festival showcases the versatility of design.

"Five years is a testament to the festival’s establishment as a vital platform for design and innovation. It’s fantastic to see how it has grown and engaged both local and international creators. We look forward to celebrating this anniversary together with our visitors and participants," says Ann Isler, Project Manager for Southern Sweden Design Days.

The festival’s main venue is Lokstallarna in Kirseberg – a historic industrial setting transformed into a vibrant space for culture and creativity. Across 6,000 sqm, exhibitions, workshops, activities for children, a live studio, and a food court will take place. Additionally, SSDD Studio will host lectures and panel discussions.

Southern Sweden Design Days is organized by Form/Design Center and is open to everyone – from industry professionals to the curious public. We welcome all to visit this year’s anniversary edition and experience the power and potential of design.

4D PRINTING WORKSHOP AT AVA VINBAR

Architect Amelia Vey Henry invites participants to a workshop on creating 4D-printed textile samples at Ava Vinbar. 4D printing on textiles is a new application of 3D technology with great potential for future architecture. By 3D-printing plastic onto stretched fabric and then releasing it, a structural deformation occurs. The method merges traditional textiles with modern manufacturing, fostering innovation, interdisciplinary collaboration, and exploration of new technical possibilities.

EAGERLY AWAITING THE STORM

As climate change progresses, summers become drier while rainfall increases during the rest of the year. Design studio Nåme explores how the properties of rain can be utilized in design and public spaces. For the exhibition at the Main Location, Nåme presents speculative artifacts for future climate adaptations. "Let It Rain!" is the first artifact in the process, a rain-collecting play sculpture that highlights the power and possibilities of rain in urban environments. The sculpture collects water, which can be released, turning rain into a resource for children's play and imagination. It will be placed in schoolyards and parks.

A CITY OF MEMORIES

Studio Blu from Gothenburg invites children and young people to a workshop at SSDD Junior in Lokstallarna, where they will create a futuristic city diorama using "memory blocks." By painting blocks with their memories – pets, places, people, or emotions – they bring the past into the present. Together, the blocks form a shared landscape. In the second part, the children's hopes and dreams for the future are added, shaping a city that reflects both our memories and our vision forward.

VÄNTRUM

Designers My Comét (tæt studio) and Stina Henriksson (sa:k design studio) once again explore the waiting room as a non-place by creating an exhibition space where visitors can linger, pause, and wait. The objects you sit on, drink from, read, and the art you observe while your thoughts wander are all part of this group exhibition, where visitors are invited to simply exist without expectations. The objects are carefully selected not just for viewing but for interaction and experience – leaving a lasting imprint of the place. Just like a waiting room, the exhibition space can be seen as a fleeting passage or something that lingers, creating an echo. How can these spaces combine to give the non-place a sense of place?

Participants: S. Henriksson, M. Comét, Beast Studio, D. Taylor, J. Nordberg, K. Willner, Pundarslöjd, E. Lewis, G. Kcab, R. Ståhl, C.F. Emrik, F. Ahlgren, F. Paulsen, J. Nordberg, K. Kyster, R. ZERO-WASTE LUXURY FASHION

Historically, less fabric was wasted in clothing production as textiles were more expensive and handwoven. Fashion designer Ivan Svanberg has studied historical tailoring techniques dating back 3,000 years to inspire and develop new patterns that minimize fabric waste. The zero-waste cutting method creates garments without waste by ensuring pattern pieces fit perfectly within the fabric. Svanberg aims to invent zero-waste patterns for all types of garments and hopes to inspire smarter design solutions in fashion. The exhibition at Lokstallarna showcases a selection of his creations, characterized by luxurious textiles and prints inspired by Scanian culture and history.

Participant: Ivan Svanberg
Location: Main location, Lokstallarna
